A Mega Wales Side Event …
The event, in The Oystercatcher, Penarth Haven, will provide the usual base to sit and chat. Close by are Cardiff's Sports Village and Bay Barrage, while the Bay Trail passes the door and provides an opportunity to undertake the Cardiff Bay Perambulation.
The event will start at 11.00 a.m. and run until 4.30 p.m.
THIS WILL BE A SPECIAL EVENT FOR US, BEING OUR 100TH OWNED CACHE. WE WILL BE PLEASED TO SEE ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CELEBRATE THE OCCASION WITH US.
Penarth Haven is a modern waterside residential area and marina, the result of redevelopment of the former Penarth Dock.
Cardiff Docks played a major part in city’s development as the means of exporting coal from the South Wales Valleys to the rest of the world, helping to power the industrial age. The coal mining industry helped fund the building of Cardiff into the capital city of Wales, while enabling the Third Marquis of Bute, who owned the docks, to become the richest man in the world at the time. As Cardiff exports grew, so did its population; dockworkers and sailors from across the world settled in neighbourhoods close to the docks, known as Tiger Bay, and communities from up to 45 different nationalities, including Norwegian, Somali, Yemeni, Spanish, Italian, Caribbean and Irish helped create the unique multicultural character of the area. After the Second World War most of the industry closed down and became derelict.
Cardiff Bay was created by the Cardiff Barrage to stimulate the redevelopment of 1,100 hectares (2,700 acres) of derelict dockland. Construction of the Barrage took place in the 1990s with closure, in 1999, creating a 500-acre (2.0 km2) freshwater lake fed by the Rivers Taff and Ely. One of the most controversial building projects of the day, the regeneration of Cardiff Bay is now widely regarded as one of the most successful projects of its kind in the United Kingdom. The Bay area was formerly tidal, with access to the sea limited to a couple of hours each side of high water, but 24 hour access is now provided through three locks.
The Bay Trail is a well signed walking and cycling route that follows as close as practical to the perimeter of Cardiff Bay. The trail is 10 km, but can be reduced by using the waterbus, road train and/or the A4232 bridge. The route takes you past Penarth Haven, the Barrage (with its locks, weirs, fish pass and exhibitions), the Senedd, Pierhead Building (original dock offices), Roald Dahl Plass (outdoor arena, familiar to Torchwood fans), Mermaid Quay, Wetlands Reserve, Cardiff Sports Village, parks, three children's play areas, lots of urban art and places to eat. It is hoped that many attendees will want to follow the Bay Trail, as a self-guided walk. You could, of course, start the perambulation where, and as early, as you like and finish when you please, but you must observe the above time window to log attendance at the event venue.
WE WILL HAVE A SMALL NUMBER OF FREE ONE-WAY TICKETS FOR THE WATERBUS AVAILABLE ON THE DAY, BUT ALLOCATION MAY HAVE TO BE PRIORITISED FOR THOSE WITH THE GREATEST NEED (E.G. FAMILIES WITH SMALL CHILDREN), ETC. IN THE EVENT OF DEMAND EXCEEDING SUPPLY, WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO BE FAIR, BUT OUR DECISION WILL NOT BE OPEN TO CHALLENGE. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS FACILITY, IT MAY HELP TO CONTACT US IN ADVANCE THROUGH OUR CACHING PROFILE.
There is parking at the venue and this can be used while you are at the venue. However you are asked to use the adjacent free public car park if you are starting a perambulation of the Bay from here. If starting elsewhere, note that long term parking around Mermaid Quay can be expensive, but a number of free or modestly charged alternatives around the Bay are identified in the Waypoints.

We will not be making any special arrangements to manage or look after Travel Bugs and Geocoins, but by all means bring your personal ones along to 'dip' into the event and show off for others to discover.
