What a strange location this is!

This water pump is beside what was once the main London to Eastbourne road.

The pump house was built in 1880 by William Broderick Thomas, the brother of the local squire, who lived at Ratton Manor and owned much of Willingdon.

It was originally a dipping hole by a spring, then a well, later covered by a well house, and finally this pump house.

The pump house walls are decorated with sheep's bones. Many years ago the gable end of the roof had the initials WBT and 1880 written with sheep's vertebrae and the side panels were completely decorated with sheep's knuckle bones within a flint border. The bones probably came from the butcher's, and its attached slaughterhouse, about 100 yards up the road.

Today the gable end bones have been completely lost so, as the knuckle bones have continued to fall out of the side panels, they have been replaced with flints.
