Moss Vale Railway Station is a station and intermediate terminus of the Southern Highlands line of the city rail intercity network, serving the town of Moss Vale and the surrounding area
The Station opened in the 2nd December 1867 then named "Sutton Forrest", but was renamed to Moss Vale 10 years latter.
The station has an unusually wide island platform, which is connected to the station entrance and the pedestrian overpass. The platform included a garden and a private dining room for Govenor Belmore who spent the summers in nearby Throsby Park from 1870 to 1872.
It was also a refreshment stop for soldiers travelling to Melbourne, they were served by a group of local ladies known as the"Blue Gum " ladies. Also injured soldiers stopped here for recouperation and care in the town at a local property on the Throsby estate.
The great Southern Railway project, designed to open up the interior and connect the two main colonies of New South Wales and Victoria.
Built by thousand of labourers, it reached Mittagong in 1867, bringing with it large tempory shanty towns with inns and tradesmens business, providing new work for hundreds of timber-getters who felled forests to lay the railway sleepers, and leaving behind new subdivided vilages in which settled many of the workers.
The subdivision was called "Moss Vale"after Jemmy Moss, a faithful servant of Throsby Park and whose bark hut stood near the present station.
It is also one of the main junctions for the Railline to Wollongong taking coal and limestone to BHP, and grain for overseas shipment .
