Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a small series that will introduce fellow cachers to bits and pieces of Broadway history and folklore.

This cache has been placed close to the two remaining cottages that were originally part of a row of twelve, the other ten being destroyed in a devastating fire on Friday 23rd June 1934.

The cottages had been built seven years earlier to provide accommodation for workers at the adjacent Gordon Russell furniture factory (which sadly closed in 2003 and has since been replaced with residential properties).

The fire was discovered at 11am in the morning and quickly took hold aided by strong winds and drought conditions. Within fifteen minutes all ten properties were ablaze and after only one hour the fire had almost burned itself out.

Two cottages were undamaged due to being a small distance away and upwind, but ten families totalling forty one people were left homeless.

A more detailed account with additional photos can be found at: (visit link)

PLEASE NOTE. Gordon Close is a private road so do not park here. There is parking nearby for the small supermarket or in the main village car park off Church Street. The cache is close to a residential area so stealth will be needed with access to the cache by walking along Gordon Close to a discreet public footpath. You are looking for a disguised Micro containing only a log. Bring your own pen/pencil.
