Geocache Description:

This cache is located at Fort Boonesborough State Park. The cache is a micro so BYOP. Please be careful and watch little kids around the river, lock and dam.

The Kentucky River has been the life-blood for Central and eastern Kentucky residents for over 200 years. Before automobiles and good roads, the Kentucky River provided the primary route of access to central and eastern Kentucky. To prevent disruptions in navigation during low water, lock and dams were built to regulate the height of the river. Built between 1902 and 1905 Lock & Dam 10 is 176 miles above the confluence of the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers. Located at the historic Fort Boonesborough State Park. Lock & Dam 10 supports a twenty four and a half mile long pool of water which supplies the cities of Winchester and Richmond water treatment systems. This essential asset to our community has faded out of sight and mind to many local residents, and Kentuckians, over the last several decades. Just as many other relics of Kentucky's rich history have been overlooked and eventually forgotten, lock number 10 at Boonesborough has started to fade into a distant memory. For more information on the Kentucky River and it's lock system visit the Kentucky River Museum located at Fort Boonesborough.
