Geocache Description:

When Hartselle was established in the 1870’s, there was a large lake located just North of the cache site. Residents enjoyed fishing, swimming and many young men took their girlfriend for a boat ride for a Sunday afternoon date. Since this was before indoor plumbing was popular, local Churches used it as a baptismal pool. Many local residents were baptized in this pond during the last part of the 19th century.

One day just before the turn of the century, residents noticed that the water level in the lake was dropping. Since it was a Sunday, local residents gathered watch the lake disappeared never to refill. Later residents learned that the water had drained into a hollow a few hundred yard to the Northeast, and then underground. The Rail Line had been making some repairs to the Railroad bed which ran about 500 feet to the West . Since blasting was involved, a crack was probably opened which allowed the water to drain into the large cave which is located under the area.
An added bonus to the draining, was that local residents waded in the mud of the draining lake and reaped a large harvest of fish. Probably a large portion of Hartselle had fish for dinner that night!
