Geocache Description:

Smithers Beach - Excellent View

Welcome to my 43rd cache hide...
This is the second of a short series in the Smithers Beach Reserve, a reserve of public land - listed as state park - on the NSW side of the Murray River, just out of Tocumwal. This is only about 2.5 kms from my home, and i never knew about his spot until today. A bit of research using Google Maps and some Murray River charts last night gave me the insight to this location.

This cache is placed about 500m past "The Entrance" cache. At the time of placing it will require a 4WD to access or a very, very, very brave 2WD or at least a high clearance 2 x 4. You can walk in from "The Entrance" if you wish, this will not present a problem with some good walking shoes.

It is really a beautiful place here as you can see by the photos i have uploaded. Be sure to close the gate when you enter, as there are cows grazing in the state park area. I think being a state park, camping is permitted in here. I believe if you can make it right to the end to Smithers Beach itself, it is a wonderful fishing spot. I will eventually place a cache right down the end, when the tracks and water dry up a bit.

An image of the log containing the hide. This is a really old log and probably a left over from when the area was extensively logged.

I have uploaded a few images for you to have a look at. It is well worth a visit for the scenery. It seems quite an unknown and unused beach / reserve. You will have to drive past a house at the end of Smithers Road to the right. The road, i can assure you is public property, and you will see the state park signs at the end of the road.

Image of the beach opposite on the Victorian side of the river. this beach is............

Here are a few pics of the mud and ruts i had to go through to set up this cache. You can make your own mind up as to what vehicle you want to use......

This one was a real challenge. I got into it and didn't realise how deep it was. A lot of gunning of the engine and 4WD action to pull myself out of this one. Water was up to the door line in the middle.

That's about it folks, BTW, the cache is a black film cannister, hidden using natural camo. Please rehide as good as it was hidden, it helps with the concealment of the container. You will see what i mean.

Hope you have a bit of fun in the area. As always in the Australian bush, LOOK OUT FOR SNAKES AND SPIDERS.

A word of waring. This log where the cache is hidden is quite close to a 3 to 4 meter drop to the river. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN SEARCHING AND EVEN MORE SO WITH KIDS. The ratings reflect the difficulty.
