_______________________________

RAF Hampstead Norris opened in 1940 as a dispersal airfield and home to 15 OTU (Operational Training Unit), using Wellington Bombers. The airfield was used for training flights but mostly to ferry the aircraft to Egypt.
The airfield was bombed by the Luftwaffe in September of 1940 and again in March 1941. Minimal damage was caused the first time but, with the second, one Wellington was downed and extensive damage was caused to the flarepath and southern taxiway. Toward the end of the war, the airfield was used for glider training, much in preparation for D Day. There were also Tiger Moths based here. After this, Hampstead Norris became a satellite of RAF Harwell, near Didcot, and latterly a satellite of Bramley Ammunition Depot after the war.
Today, little remains of the area’s previous use. A number of pillboxes, shelters and suchlike are still visible. However, as they are off the public footpaths, we do not condone going to find them in the woods near the caches!
Enjoy!

EDIT: FTF - kryfto :-)
