The cache is a 7
litre container in a home-made camo bag, accessible from the path.
Please take care to replace the cache so that it can't be
seen from the path — cover it up if necessary.
Public access to the cache site isn't a problem, but be sure to
leave your car by the barrier, even if it's open.
Bonus points (although it's not required to claim the find) if
you upload pictures of the scenery, fish or waterfowl!
Beware of the Hays Creek crocodile! Local legend has it that he
was released into the reservoir as a prank by drunk zoo workers,
but could never be recaptured. Now he lurks around the banks, only
being seen when he seizes naughty children, dragging them to the
murky depths.
Book swaps
When you visit the cache, why not bring a book to swap?
There should be at least three books in the cache — when
you take a book, please leave at least one in its place. The cache
also contains normal trade items.
More about Hays Creek
Dam
Hays Creek Dam is part of Auckland's water supply system, mainly
comprising of dams around the Hunua and Waitakere Ranges —
these hills receive about one and a half times the amount of rain
that Auckland City gets.
The dam was completed in 1967. The reservoir has an area of 18.2
hectares, and a capacity of 1.1 million cubic metres. It's the
smallest of the Hunua Ranges dams.
In colonial times there was a sawmill somewhere around Hays
Creek, milling kauri and other trees, but its exact location has
been lost in the mists of time and the relentlessly fast-growing
vegetation.
