Commissioned by King Rama 5 (King Chulalongkorn) and built in 1869 is was the Royal Temple of his reign.
Few tourists go to this temple which is a shame but also nice in that there are no crowds. I would rate this as the best temple in Thailand.
Wat Ratchabophit was built by King Rama V in 1869 and displays a variety of western and local influences – the outside of the temple is very much Thai while the interior is more reminiscent of European design. The temple has a large Chedi housing a ‘Lopburi-style’ Buddha image. The doors, windows and internal beams are decorated with gold leaf and small mirrors. Many of the buildings within the temple have a Gothic feel. This is yet another beautiful temple that is worthy of a visit if your time in Bangkok permits.
On the west end of the temple grounds is a Royal Cemetery, with numerous monuments to major and minor members of the Royal Family, most notably those in the immediate family of King Chulalongkorn. One of the memorials, the Rangsi Vadhana Memorial, contains the ashes of Mahidol Adulyadej (The Kings Father), Srinagarindra (The Kings Mother) and Galyani Vadhana (The Kings Sister).
Note the foreign guards on the doors. All very odd.
Ratchabophit means built by the King. Wat Ratchabophit is a royal temples of the highest rankThe name of the temple, Rajabopit means Temple under the Royal Construction and sathitmahasimaram, means with the Great Sacred Boundaries. The temple was intended to be the residence of the monks of Thamayutinikaya Sect.
