Geocache Description:

The remains of a Schuylkill Canal Aqueduct now paved over.

The Schuylkill Navigation Company completed the Schuylkill Canal in 1825. This proved a boon to the villages along the Schuylkill as it meant that it was much easier to get things shipped to you and for you to ship your goods to other towns, especially Philadelphia. Monocacy Furnace was built here for that reason.

Sixpenny Creek goes through this village, and a small aqueduct, also called a culvert, was built here. After the canal was abandoned PA Route 724 used some of the foundation of the aqueduct for the bridge. Parts of the aqueduct can still be found on either side of the 724 bridge. The remains of the towpath are on the river side of the highway bridge, and are higher than the road.

The best way to approach this cache is from the Thun Trail. From the cache location you can look down on the road and the remains of the canal.
