Thanks to Greg Lemond, I got into cycling and then racing. I actually had the pleasure to meet him at the Major Taylor Velodrome. Watching Lemond win his second Tour de France (TDF) in 1989 was thrilling. That event inspired many to try bike racing. Lemond had come back from a near fatal hunting accident to try his hand at the TDF. His goal, finish the event.

It was high drama as Lemond had to overcome a 50 second deficit on the last stage, a 15 mile time trial. During this time trial, in which competitors race against the clock, no one gave Lemond hope of gaining enough time to defeat Fignon. However, Lemond won by the closest margin in history, eight seconds, while setting a record speed for a TDF stage. Lemond also won the TDF the following year and his first in 1986. In 1985, he could have won the TDF but was riding in support of a struggling team leader and thus finished second. Lemond was also a two time World Champion in 1983 and 1989. In the latter, he battled 5 other contenders over the last climb and closing miles, including Fignon. Lemond outsprinted Sean Kelly and Dimitri Konyshev for the victory. Lemond broke ground in Europe, pioneering the way for later generations of American cyclists. Many forgot his accomplishments with the onset of Lance Armstrong. This is a heavily camoed container, NO WHERE near the railroad tracks. You can find it without leaving pavement.
