Geocache Description:

YOU CAN SEE THE WATERFALL AND SEE AN OLD PART OF SCOTT COUNTY HISTORY FROM THE CACHE LOCATION. THE CACHE IS A SMALL MEDICINE BOTTLE IN CAMO TAPE. I GAVE A LITTLE HIGHER RATING BECAUSE YOU MIGHT GET SOME COORD BOUNCE AT GROUND ZERO..ENJOY AND RAGE ON!!!

I DON'T KNOW VERY MUCH ABOUT THE WATERFALL EXCEPT IT IS BEAUTIFUL AND HAS A NICE VIEWING PLATFORM. NOW ONTO THE JAIL HISTORY. The Scott County Jail is one of the oldest buildings in Scott County. It was built in 1904, using large sandstone from the local area.

The facility, which housed around 50 inmates, was in use for much of its century-long history. For a short period of time, inmates were housed at a new facility nearby before the jail was eventually reopened. The jail was closed for good in 2008 with the opening of the Scott County Justice Center. The jail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its future is currently being deliberated. In December, 1849, Scott County was established by an act of the state legislature. The new county was named for Gen. Winfield Scott, a hero of the War of 1812. Scott County's first election was held in 1850, with John Lewallen elected sheriff, Allen McDonald elected county clerk, John L. Smith elected Circuit Court Clerk, Isaac Reed elected Trustee and Riley Chambers elected registrar. The first courthouse in Scott County was erected in 1851. It would be used until 1874, when a new courthouse was constructed. A third courthouse was built in 1906 and still stands today. In 2008, a justice center was built to house Scott County's courts, jail and county judicial offices.
