Pioneer's Rest Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

bikerbuddy: I went back to the cemetery today to consider options for this cache. However, given that the cache puzzle was originally built around two chirps (which I can no longer edit because I have a different GPS) and the chirp technology never really seemed to gain popularity, I have decided it's best to archive this one. Thanks to all the cachers who went out to look for this one.

Geocache Description:

A Springwood Local History Cache
It is recommended you read this page prior to your search

As a courtesy, I would appreciate it if those doing this cache do not reveal details about it in their logs, particularly the name of our pioneer, since he is linked to two of my caches.

In order to find this cache you will need a GPS capable of receiving signals from an electronic beacon, or signal,  known as a 'chirp'. You may need to update the software on your unit before you can receive the signal.

This is something of an experiment for me. In time, depending on how the chirps survive, I may or may not change aspects of the cache. For the moment, I'm trying out the chirp, although I think they're a bit of a gimmick and I'm not sure how much they will impact on geocaching. Maybe you can give your opinion about that in your log. To continue the experiment, I have attached a chirp as a FTF prize.

This cache is meant to be a sister cache to PIONEER, a cache I published last year.
When you find this cache, Pioneer's Rest, you will also be given the same information that is available at WP1 of the Pioneer cache. That waypoint is not available on Sundays, since the library in which it resides is not open then. Therefore, if you choose, completing this cache also allows you to bypass the first waypoint of Pioneer. Look for the information on the bottom side of the cache container.

To begin a search for this cache, you will need to go toSt Paul's Anglican Church, next to the Emu Plains General Cemetery. The church was established in the 1850s. The earliest readable inscriptions in the cemetery date from the 1860s. Later, provision was made for other denominations to be buried there. There are no official burial records for the cemetery as they were burned in a rectory fire in 1929. For this reason, the only records that exist are those taken from readable headstones. Any headstones that are unreadable are therefore not recorded.

The subject of this cache is the same Springwood local who features in my Pioneer cache, who was instrumental in the development of Springwood in its early years, yet is now largely forgotten. He is buried in the cemetery but his name does not appear on the Australian Cemeteries Index, in which graves are photographed and inscriptions made. His inscription is still largely readable, so I don't know why this has happened.

When I did the original research for the Pioneer cache last year, Springwood library had no record of his grave, either. To locate the grave I had to do a bit of detective work to find out the most likely cemetery, and then it was a matter of walking up and down until I found the grave. I later gave all my research on the grave to the Local Studies Librarian in Springwood Library, where it is now archived.

To find the cache:

The coordinates listed on this page will take you to the front door of St. Paul's Anglican Church. There you should receive a chirp signal that tells you the name of our Springwood pioneer, as well as coordinates for his grave.

To help you find the cache you will need to calculate the following coordinates from the grave :

South 33 44.ABC, East 150 39.DEF

    A =
The last digit in the year of our pioneer's death, or the third digit in the year of death for his son

    B =
The number of people interred in this grave

    C =
The number of full decades lived by our pioneer's son

    D
One less than the number of the day of the month in which our pioneer's wife, Mary, or son died

    E =
One more than the number of the day of the month in which our pioneer's wife, Mary, or son died

    F =  B + C -1

Once you have these coordinates, move to the new location and wait for further instructions from a signal to your GPS.

Please return the cache as you found it, unless it was visible when you found it, in which case, please make sure the cache is not visible.

I would like to thank Minister Jones for permission to place the chirp at the church.

Congratulations go to Toriaz for a FTF without a chirp enabled GPS!
