Il terremoto dell'Aquila del 2009 consta di una serie di eventi sismici, iniziati nel dicembre 2008.
La scossa principale, verificatasi il 6 aprile 2009 alle ore 3:32, ha avuto una magnitudo pari a 5,9 della scala Richter e 6,3 magnitudo momento (Mw)
La sequenza si è aperta con una scossa di lieve entità (magnitudo 1,8) il 14 dicembre 2008 e poi è ripresa con maggiore intensità il 16 gennaio 2009 con scosse inferiori a magnitudo 3.0 per poi protrarsi, con intensità continuamente crescente, fino all'evento principale.
Inizialmente, oltre alla zona dell'aquilano, è stata interessata, come epicentro dell'attività, anche la zona di Sulmona (17 e 29 marzo 2009, magnitudo 3,7 e 3,9). Nei giorni successivi alla scossa principale altri intensi focolai sismici si sono sviluppati a sud-est del capoluogo (Valle dell'Aterno, epicentro Ocre: scosse del 7 e dell'8 aprile 2009 con magnitudo tra 3,0 e 5,6 Mw) e poco più a nord (zona del Gran Sasso, epicentro Campotosto: scosse del 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 e 13 aprile 2009 con magnitudo tra 3,1 e 5,4 Mw). Le scosse di assestamento si sono prolungate per circa un anno dall'evento principale.
Nelle 48 ore dopo la scossa principale, si sono registrate altre 256 scosse, delle quali più di 150 nel giorno di martedì 7 aprile, di cui 56 oltre la magnitudo 3,0 della scala Richter. Tre eventi di magnitudo superiore a 5,0 sono avvenuti il 6, il 7 e il 9 aprile. Dall'esame dei segnali della stazione INGV aquilana (AQU, ubicata nei sotterranei del Forte spagnolo), sono state conteggiate oltre 10.000 scosse.
Nell'anno che ha seguito l'evento del 6 aprile, l'INGV ha registrato circa 18.000 terremoti in tutta l'area della città dell'Aquila.
Il bilancio definitivo è di 308 morti, circa 1600 feriti, circa 65.000 gli sfollati.
Il terremoto è stato avvertito su una vasta area comprendente tutto il Centro Italia, fino a Napoli, causando panico tra la popolazione, e inducendola a riversarsi in strada. La regione più colpita è stata l'Abruzzo, seguita dal Lazio. Alcuni lievi danni sono stati riscontrati nella zona di Ascoli Piceno, nelle Marche.
