The ancient name for
this hill is Monad Croib. In Scottish Gaelic, that would be Monadh
Craobh, or Hill of the Tree. The hill is planted with many
different types of trees, planted over the centuries. Douglas fir
is common on the lower slopes, as are ash and sycamore. With Scots
pine at the higher levels.

Most of the main
trails are on stone-surfaced forest tracks or narrow firm paths,
but these can get muddy at times. Gradients are generally moderate
but steep in places such as up to the two hill forts.
