Geocache Description:

Established in 1871, this is the larges and most important of Chinatown’s many Chinese temples. Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, or Dragon Flower Temple, is particularly active during the Vegetarian Festival in October, when devotees flock here to make offerings.

Also known as Wat Leng Noi Yee, it has an impressive entrance gateway and the complex contains Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian shrines. It is constantly busy with people making offerings, and vendors selling religious goods outside the temple do a brisk business.

During the annual Vegetarian Festival, religious and culinary activities are centred here. But almost any time of day or night this temple is busy with worshippers lighting incense, filling the ever-burning altar lamps with oil and making offerings to their ancestors. Offering oil is believed to provide a smooth journey into the afterlife and to fuel the fire of life.

Surrounding the temple are vendors selling food for the gods – steamed lotus-shaped dumplings and oranges – that are used for merit making.
