In 1870, when Judge R.W.P. Muse and D.L. Lakin first came to Newton looking for a location for the trains to come through, there was only a few settlers in this area. When Judge Muse came back almost one year later he found those settlers had grown and Newton was beginning to become Newton. Even a few businesses were starting to go up. It is recorded that the first 3 businesses were a blacksmith shop, Peter Luhn’s store called the “Pioneer store, and a bakery. Through my research I have not been able to locate the blacksmith shop or the bakery. But part of the pioneer store is left inside this building.
