Gong Wu is an ancient shrine dating back over 270 years and is located on the bank of the Chao Praya River in Somdet Ya (Princess Mother Community), Khlong San area on the Thonburi side, Bangkok.
The first of the 3 Gong Wu statues was brought to Thailand around 1736 by Hokkien Chinese traders. On site there are 3 primary temple buildings of various ages. The one pictured appears to be the oldest of the three.
Little is written about this shrine and it is quite difficult to find in the tangle of back streets of Somdet Chao Praya. It was a great personal find - more like a scene you would see in China! Check out the pictures.
The Princess Mother Memorial Park (Suan Somdet Ya)
is a park behind and along side the shrine. It was established in 1993, and opened on January 21, 1997, by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in remembrance of his mother, Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother.
The park contains gardens and a reproduction of the royal mother's childhood home, as well as two exhibition halls showing memorabilia of the princess and the royal family and a pavilion with a statue of the princess. There is also a souvenir shop which sells items from charitable foundations and social welfare organisations which used to be under her patronage; the profits go to help the poor and the destitute.
