4.23. Unarchiving a Geocache

The archiving of a geocache is intended to be a permanent status. That is why only community volunteer reviewers and Geocaching HQ staff have the capability to unarchive it. This is done only in rare circumstances and only if it meets the current Geocache Listing Guidelines.

If a geocache is archived by a reviewer or staff for lack of maintenance it will not be unarchived.

Geocache Description:

Another in the Petersham Landmark series. This is a traditional cache hidden in a pedestrian tunnel next to Petersham Train Station, which shouldn't be too hard to find if you are used to finding city caches.

From the cache side of the tunnel, you can see the old Petersham Train Station which opened in 1857. The station is the largest and one of the few remaining Victorian stations left in Sydney, and was built as a "First Class" station. It is unusual for a station as it has dual sweeping stairs leading up to the station.

The tunnel built in 1892 used to provide access to the train platforms but was closed in 1988. Access to the train station today is via a pedestrian bridge to the North of the tunnel.

Australian poet Henry Lawson is said to have wrote the keynote of his poem 'Faces In the Street' on the station.

Take a moment to think about the ladies and the gentlemen of yesteryear dressed up in their finery as they went to catch their train.

There is plenty of parking on either side of the tunnel. For wheelchairs and prams, the parking on the Northern side is best is that side of the tunnel is accessible. There is a set of stairs on the Southern side.

The tunnel is in use, but is quite run down, so if you are alone at night, I would suggest some caution.

Co-ord done with an Iphone, so you how inaccurate they are. Co-ords should take you to the start of the tunnel, so accurate co-ords aren't really necessary.

While you are in the area, why not take ten minute walk down the road to do Petersham Landmarks #1 (visit link) or Petersham Landmarks #2 (visit link)
