Geocache Description:

Sept 2015 Update - Construction has finished and the road the cache is on is no longer accessible from the 118. The road is still accessible from the other side, and parking is available

Size is micro/small – can hold small trackables and trinkets. This is a busy area at certain times of the day – look nonchalant as you poke around A travel bug and a dollar coin for first to find [Note: I can watch my GPSr accuracy (Colorado 400t) drop from 10 ft to 25 ft as I approach this area on foot. The cache is north of 118, and a few feet back from the edge of the road and NOT down in the barranca (the deep gully)

Save Our Somis (SOS) is the reason you can stand here and geocache! If it weren’t for the local residents who formed the organization Save Our Somis a few years ago, this location would probably be the #3 lane of the improved 6 lane intersection Caltrans wanted to build here with Route 34. Their construction would probably have resulted in the expansion of Route 34 to a four lane road, effectively destroying the main street of Somis. It would have also been the opening for Caltrans to expand route 118 to a 4 lane divided highway (to replace the proposed 118 freeway extension that had been on the drawing board years ago). Save Our Somis insisted (in the court) that Caltrans really needed to do a FULL Environmental Impact Study, since this construction project would have a significant impact on noise and pollution in the surrounding area, the small (1/4 acre) wetland that apparently exists in the barranca, and to the trees that host Monarch butterflies during their migration. The court agreed. Caltrans backed down

Some argue that Save Our Somis is/was a roadblock to progress -- I like to think that they are fighting a delaying action to keep some of the areas of Ventura county rural – the ‘battle’ continues. This was originally going to be my first hide -- but due to circumstances I did not want to control, it ends up as #6
