Geocache Description:

This cache brings you to the holiday village of Gyles Quay for a short walk along the beach

Gyles' Quay is an isolated stretch of beach located along the northern side of Dundalk Bay just off the road to Carlingford. It was named after Ross Gyles who build a wood structure there in 1780. It was later rebuilt in stone in 1824 and survives to this day.

The long isolated beach with accessible hinterland made it very attractive to smugglers who used the beach for importing wine and tobacco. In 1823 the authorities constructed a coastguard watch station to limit the illegal imports. Today tourists are drawn to the area for the long beach expanse and the caravan park located overlooking the area.

The cache
The coordinates bring you to the start of the pier in Gyles Quay. There is ample parking in the area. On a clear day this should afford you a good view of the entire bay all the way to the town of Dundalk.

Stage One; From the above coordinates you will need to take a walk down the pier and get the following information.

The number of concrete docking points on the pier, call this A
The number of liferings on the pier, call this B
The number of wavy lines on the strong currents sign, call this C
The total number of vertical posts on the small gate at the far end of the pier (exclude the outer post on each side), call this D
The number of streetlights on the pier, call this E

Stage Two; this is the final location and you will find the cache here. It involves a walk of over 1.3km along the northern beach. The beach consists mostly of sand and loose rocks. There is also a path that runs parallel with the beach for a lot of the way

Please note that the fields alongside most of the beach are all private property and we have no permission to be there. This includes the derelict cottage you will pass quite close by
While most of the walk is fairly easy, you will have a river to cross near GZ. Wellies should be adequate when the tide is out but the crossing is a lot trickier when the tide is in
The cache is a micro containing only a log so please byop. As with any cache placed in the vicinity of our waterways caution should be exercised while walking along the coast especially with younger cachers.
