Geocache Description:

Another of Wellington's many spectacular viewpoints looking out over the Town Belt.

In November 2010, Wellington City Council opened this lookout on Te Ahumairangi Hill, formerly known as Tinakori Hill but renamed as a result of the Port Nicholson Block (Taranaki Whanui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika) Claims Settlement Act 2009. Picnic tables on a pleasant flat area are nearby. You can drive to and park within a few metres of the lookout. Before European settlement the entire ridgeline was known as Te Ahumairangi. When Europeans settled one of the first roads constructed ran along the foot of the range. The story was that Maori road workers were annoyed they had to work through their lunch time (kahore means none; tina means dinner). The anglicised phrase became Tinakori and became the name of the road and the ridge. In the last 10 years, there has been much replanting of native trees on the hillside after removal of many pines that had fallen or been damaged in recent storms. The lookout stands on the location of Wellington Radio's former receiving station which was demolished in 1975. The Wellington City Council has plans for further improvements to this significant area of the Town Belt. There are many walking tracks on Te Ahu-Mairangi Hill. Please make sure the cache is wedged firmly back in place.
