Read Old bridge is the site of a battle , where in April 1643, 400 largely untrained Parliamentarians from Padiham, ambushed 4000 Royalists from the Whalley area. The Royalists retreated!
It is also close to the now ruined Read Cornmill, and the place where it is said, bottled beer was invented in the 16th century, when a young lad, Alexander Nowell, later Dean of St. Paul's in London, left a flagon of beer cooling in the stream whilst on a fishing trip. When he returned some days or weeks later, he found it frothy and very palatable!
