Ormsgill reservoir

This is one of a series of caches taking in a lovely local urban walk around ormsgill reservoir

This is a 25 acre reservoir that used to supply water to the steel works for cooling. In the last 30 years both connection pipes have been removed one now which as directly below the Wilkie road bank, named after the Manager who took Barrow AFC to a famous Wembley 3-0 win against leek town in 1990 FA trophy final (visit link)

The rez as it is known to locals has numerous birdlife and has recently had a pair of black swans, various geese and a massive range of diving birds, bring some bread if your with the kids and I have also seen but only a few times a kingfisher flying around the railway as well as the northern bank

Fishing can be at times prolific with around 300 carp in the rez topped by the biggest being a fish named the Convict at around 27lb but has been over 30 pound at times, you may see some near to the tally ho island or in the north west shallows of the lake.

There was at one time a golf range behind the northern bank that only stayed open for around a year and some believed that the carp in the rez ended up eating the odd stray ball!

The rez has some regular dog walkers and there is a fantastic couple that feed the birds and take any rubbish away that they find, I wish more people where like this.

I am dedicating this series of cache's to a friend of mine that passed away Mr Keith Flatman who spent much of his time time on the banks of the rez. He also introduced me to carp fishing and many other things, good or bad ;-)

.. it is wheeelchair accessible but you may need a hand to reach the cache ..on a stair level.

This is a 5 min cache from Barrow AFC if visiting.
