Sheriff S. Marion Bliss, one of Carbon County's most popular sheriffs, was shot and killed on April 23, 1945, while in pursuit of murder suspect, Angus Robb. Sheriff Bliss and four other members of a posse approached the canal, near the main highway in Carbonville, in which Robb was concealed. Some of the posse members thought they saw Robb and began firing shots; with one of those shots killing Sheriff Bliss. It was established by a coroner's jury, at the inquest, that the bullet which killed the sheriff was not fired by Angus Robb but rather by a bullet fired from the gun or guns of a person or persons unknown. And so the answer to the question, "Who shot the sheriff"? still remains a mystery.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Sheriff S. Marion Bliss, a republican, served 18 years as Carbon County Sheriff winning with substantial majorities every one of the five times he ran for office. His successful attempt to prevent a jailbreak, in 1931, cost him his right arm below the elbow. This handicap didn't stop him from returning to his duties as sheriff. With diligent practice he became as adept left handed with pistol and rifle as he was with his right hand. He was an avid fisherman and rancher. He was elected sheriff on Jan. 1, 1927. He was elected President of the Utah Peace Officers' Association in 1932. Born in Toquerville, Utah, Nov. 12, 1884, he was the son of Josephine Harriet Lee Bliss and Arlie Bliss and the grandson of John D. Lee.
