Geocache Description:

Hidden along the Ross track you will find another Gold mine. A wonderful assortment of native NZ bush in the area and a lovely little stream nearby. If you decide to do this cache at night or dusk, you will be presented with a lovely display of the native NZ Glow Worm in the area.

4.2.5 Mining and Early Forestry The hillside of Parihaka has also been prospected for gold. Three shafts have been sunk. The first was by Daniel and Jeremiah Horne in the 1850’s on the right hand side of the gully facing Mair Park. J W and A H Reed and Colonel Mackesy sank a further shaft in 1893 from a property on Mackesy Road and the final shaft was sunk in 1909 in the area of Ross Park. Economic quantities of gold were never found. In 1898 H R Holman and G Kerr prospected in various parts of Parihaka but, again, did not find gold in payable quantities. From: http://www.wdc.govt.nz/resources/13254/Parihaka-and-Hatea-River-Reserves-Management-Plan-2009.pdf discovered an old mine shaft. Someone earlier in the century had followed a thin brown seam shot with a trace of gold, hoping it would turn into something richer. It didn’t. From: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/the-new-zealand-bush/3/3 If you come at dusk/night, you will need torches or headlamps but you will be presented with a wonderful display of the beauty of the native NZ glow worm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnocampa This is an easily accessible mine. it seems fairly safe as is only goes in a few meters, water seems to trickle from inside. There was a set of stairs further up from the Gold Mine. Up the path along to GZ
