Short walk to a waterfall.
Since the felling of the trees began around Thirlmere the views have 'opened up' enormously to great effect - whether driving through or walking in the area the 'lake' is now visible to behold. You can approach the falls from two directions giving a choice of a walk through the trees from parking at Wythburn Church or across the open fell from the layby at Dunmail Raise. After rain the water thunders and splashes down Birkside Gill from the picturesque Willie Wife Moor resulting in those gushy, white waterfalls - visible from the road as you drive by, an accurate gauge to recent rainfall. What a glorious place to have a picnic on a summer's day or just lean on the little bridge and absorb the views - while others pass you by and go up to Helvellyn. From this direction you can see how the infamous 'Lion and Lamb' of Helm Crag has become the ominous Howitzer pointing up to the heavens - an amazing transition to observe as you drive along the A591 in either direction.
