Geocache Description:

This cache was creatively hidden to show the effects of the bad economy! Log only, BYOP!

March 2006 construction began in Bethel Island, California. At the time it was one of the largest residential developments to be constructed in Northern California. This project was supposed to turn a former dairy farm on an island into a premier water-oriented residential community. The development boasted 320-acre residential waterfront community. It included 494 lots (416 with docks, 19 new streets and marina. In order to build this the levee had to be breeched. The estimated value of the project was $140,000,000. Extensive excavation, grading and engineering was needed to create a navigable waterway that provides fast-water boating access to San Francisco Bay and the River Delta. The marina basin was dredged to 21 feet below mean sea level. Construction of a 130-acre lagoon prompted strategic governmental relations and community relations/public outreach to garner local, state and federal approvals. At one point during the excavation, archaeologist and experts in Native Americans history were called in to evaluate bones and artifacts. This project created a lot of concern for the levees integrity for the local residents. It was supposed to open May 2008, but that never happened. Today this area is an abandoned gated financial disaster. The lots, lagoon and floating docks sit empty. Except for the occasional security patrol it is a modern day ghost town. Recently 5 docks and a large amount of copper wire were stolen. It is a sad reflection of the financial markets hitting rock bottom.
