Geocache Description:

Micros aren't really our thing but Carlisle is such an interesting place, some locations are worth sharing. This is one of the places where former wealthy Carlislians resided!

Chatsworth Square was developed by C J Ferguson, the local agent for the Duke of Devonshire. It was surrounded by railings in the spring of 1876. The houses surrounding the square were rather grand and imposing but now are primarily used for office accommodation. Several of the streets around here have associations with the family, several being named after properties owned by the Duke. Chatsworth House was the family seat in Derbyshire. Chiswick House on the outskirts of London was leased from the Duke by King Edward VIIth. The Marquis of Hartington was the courtesy title given to the eldest son of the Duke. Compton Place was another country house on the outskirts of Eastbourne and the Duke owned property in The Strand, London

At about 6.45pm, one winter’s evening in 1999, a local cleaning lady was vacuuming the upper floor corridor of 1 Chatsworth Square. The building was silent when the vacuum stared to make a whining noise as if paper had got stuck in the rollers. As the cleaning lady stopped to unplug the machine, she saw a stern looking, youngish woman in a full length grey dress standing with her arms folded at the end of the corridor. As the cleaning lady asked “Can I help you?” she realised that the grey lady was semi-translucent and she could see straight through her. The cleaner panicked and ran down four flights of stairs, leaving the vacuum cleaner switched on. It transpired that other cleaners had seen the woman on other occasions but had never shared the knowledge freely. Who was she? Was she the governess of a privileged family living in the square or was she the housekeeper, coming to check on the deplorable standards of cleaning achieved by her latter day team of servants?

Please adopt considerable stealth tactics here and replace cache carefully. There are usually parked cars to provide cover
