Running Deer: Vanwege de 3e of 4e keer dat er een nieuwe cachebehuizing geplaatst moet worden en het feit dat er op een of andere manier steeds weer aanwijzingen blijken te verdwijnen, hebben wij besloten om deze cache te archiveren. Jammer, dat wel, want uit de logs bleek wel dat er toch menig cacher weemoedig terug dacht aan de tijden van de Screaming Eagles als ze over de Startbaan liepen om de gelijknamige cache te vinden.

Startbaan

De sluiting van vliegbasis Soesterberg maakte onderdeel uit van een bezuiniging op het ministerie van Defensie die het kabinet in 2003 aankondigde. De vliegfunctie van de helicopters is overgenomen door vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen. Op Vliegbasis Soesterberg wordt alleen nog door zweefvliegers gevlogen.

Vliegbasis Soesterberg behelst ruim 500 hectare (ruim duizend voetbalvelden!) grond. Daarvan blijft ongeveer 120 hectare in bezit van Defensie. Het gaat om Camp New Amsterdam en het Nationaal Defensiemuseum dat gehuisvest is in de hangars. Hier zijn het legermuseum uit Delft en het luchtvaartmuseum uit Soesterberg samengebracht. Eind 2014 heeft het museum haar poorten geopend.

Wat gaat er straks gebeuren op de vliegbasis Soesterberg? Een aantal dingen staat vast. Zo zal een groot deel van de heringerichte vliegbasis een prachtig natuurgebied zijn. Een deel van het natuurgebied is vooral bedoeld voor de bijzondere planten en dieren, maar door andere delen lopen fiets- en wandelpaden, zodat bezoekers van de natuur kunnen genieten. Ook komt er een boomkroonpad, zodat bezoekers over het gebied kunnen uitkijken. Op 3 plekken komt woningbouw. Met de opbrengst daarvan worden de natuurontwikkeling bekostigd en de toeristische voorzieningen aangelegd. Met bijzondere evenementen in het museumkwartier wordt het gebied een cultuurtoeristische trekker van formaat

In het Ruimtelijk Plan is een belangrijke plek gereserveerd voor beide landingsbanen. De open plek met het schraalgrasland rondom de banen blijft intact. De banen worden wel tot hun essentie teruggebracht; overbodig asfalt en opstelplateaus worden verwijderd. Het is de bedoeling dat bezoekers ook over enige tijd zich nog kunnen voorstellen dat hier lange tijd vliegtuigen opstegen en landden. Op het westelijk deel van de zuidelijke landingsbaan kan in de toekomst zelfs gefietst worden .

De route is slechts een korte route van ongeveer 2 kilometer over het gedeelte vliegveld wat momenteel opengesteld is. We sluiten niet uit dat de route aangepast zal worden zodra het gebied van openstelling voor publiek uitgebreid wordt. Vanwege de historische waarde én de vele logjes bij Spot, hebben we echter besloten om nu alvast deze cache te maken, ondanks de beperkte wandeling en ietwat onlogische route. Overigens is voor het plaatsen van de cache toestemming verleend door de organisatie ‘hart van de Heuvelrug’ mits er geen munitiekistje geplaatst zou worden. We hebben dan ook extra aandacht besteedt aan deze stash. Daarnaast dient de bezoeker van het gebied zich wel aan de regels te houden; alleen betreden tussen zonsopkomst en zonsondergang en wandelen is alleen toegestaan op paden en verharding. De stash ligt dan ook maar een paar passen van een verhard pad af.

Ga door naar punt 2: N 52°07.799' - E005°16.912'. Stapeltel het woord op dit object. Het antwoord is B.

De route gaat vervolgens naar punt 3: N 52°07.569' - E005°16.935'. Je trof hier een cijfer/lettercombinatie aan, die ook wel gebruikt wordt om een snelweg aan te duiden. Inmiddels is het bordje verdwenen. Neem de cijferlettercombinatie circa 5 meter links en rechts van het cöordinaat. Tel de getallen bij elkaar en deel de uitkomst door 2, dit getal is C.

Runway

The closure of the Soesterberg Airbase was part of a cut in the Department of Defense announced by the government in 2003. The flight function was taken over by helicopter airbase Gilze-Rijen. Soesterberg Airbase is now used by glider pilots..

Soesterberg Airbase covers over 500 hectares (over one thousand football fields!) Land. Approximately 120 acres are owned by the Department of Defense. Here Camp New Amsterdam is located and the new build National Defense Museum, which is housed in the old airbase hangars. This new Museum is a combination of the Army Museum from Delft and the military aviation museum from Soesterberg. At the end of 2014, the museum has opened its gates.

What will happen later on at Soesterberg Airbase? A few things are for sure. A large part of the refurbished airbase will become a beautiful nature area. Part of the area is intended for rare plants and animals, and in other parts bicycle and walking trails will be constructed , allowing visitors to enjoy nature. 3 area’s are appointed for housing. The proceeds of this will flow back to the nature and tourist facilities.

In the Spatial Plan is an important place reserved for the two runways. The clearing of the arid grasslands around the tracks remains intact. The runways will be reduced to their essence, surplus asphalt and plateaus will be removed. The intent is that in the future visitors will still be able to imagine that aircrafts took off and landed her in the past. Eventually the western part of the southern runway may be used for cycling.

On the former airbase many hiking and biking trails will be constucted, so visitors can enjoy nature and the vastness of the area. Also, a passage through the treetops will be constructed, so visitors can look out over the area from there. The museum quarter with the National Defense Museum and information center for the Ridge will soon also offer something for everyone. With special events at the Museum Quarter, the area will become a cultural tourist attraction.

The cache route is only a short route over the former airbase area that is currently open to the public. We do not exclude that the route will be changed once the field is opened up further to the public. Because of the historical value and many logs to Spot however, we decided to share this cache now, despite the limited and somewhat illogical walk route. Permission for placing the cache was granted to us by the organization "Heart of the hills" with the restriction that we cannot place a ammunition box. We therefore put some extra effort and attention into this stash. In addition, the visitor of the site itself or to follow the rules, just enter between sunrise and sunset and is only allowed on hiking trails and pavement. The stash is therefore only a few steps from a paved path.
