This cache was hidden for the Spring Cache Challenge. Do not look
for it before 6pm, Friday, May 6, 2011!
The time of year, weather and forest fire conditions could make
this an extremely busy location to visit. Forest Fire season
runs from April 1st through October 31st so be advised. Smokey
Bear (note NOT Smokey the Bear), is a mascot of the
U.S. Forest Service created to educate the public about the dangers
of forest fires. Who hasn't heard the slogan: "Only YOU Can Prevent
Forest Fires"?
There is room to park on the sideroad just in front of the Thunder
Bay Fire Centre, please DO NOT attempt to enter through the gate
onto MNR property (the cache is not over there). During fire season
you may see 4-member fire crews coming and going in their crew cab
pick-up trucks. Look closely and you'll see that the Fire Centre is
located adjacent to the airport. Watch also for a fire crew
dispatch via helicopter (the bright orange number on the sides
denotes the Helitak #). Water bombers - the CL415s and accompanying
Bird Dog aircraft are stationed here as well. You may also see a
Twin Otter that "bombs" water from its floats. This facility is
extremely important to the West Fire Region for another reason
though - the recycle (cleaning, repair, refurbishment, etc.) of
fire equipment is a key role performed here. At times the arrival
of transport loads of hose, pumps, and miscellaneous other gear
needing recycling is a daily occurrence. The hustle and bustle and
organized chaos during a "fire flap" is something to behold.
Though we reference Smokey Bear, he promotes Fire Prevention and
this cache is located adjacent to a facility primarily devoted to
Fire Suppression. It is now recognized that fire is a natural and
important part of the ecosystem and needs to be managed. Thank
you to all the men and women that help manage forest fires!
You're looking for a camouflaged container that is positioned so as
to be safe from the nearby hazard.
