Known as the “Cornerstone of West Virginia,” Kingwood is located approximately thirty minutes from Morgantown, nearly bordering the state of Maryland. Strolling through the historic town, will take people back in time, but its collection of unique boutiques and eateries make Kingwood the go-to-place for everyone. Twelve years ago Main Street Kingwood’s revitalization efforts began with the purchase of the 1859 red brick Federal Style building known as the Preston County Inn and since that first purchase the organization has purchased four additional properties and most recently acquired the 1877 Bishop Block located on Price Street. Kingwood is also home to a 1950’s era Esso Station with the famous Mae West Pumps. The station has been featured in many magazine articles and historic documentaries. The James C McGrew House is the go to place for historic events. History abounds in Kingwood whose people remained staunch supporters of the Union cause during the Civil War. Two residents, William G. Brown and James C. McGrew severed as delegates from Kingwood and Preston County at the Secession Convention in Richmond in 1861. Kingwood and Preston County led the entire nation in devotion to the Union cause by sending the largest percentage of its population to serve in the Union army.
