Geocache Description:

This is a lovely pond which over the years has risen from being a small polluted steelwork cooling pond to a flourishing area for all manner of wildlife.
There is also a nice walk along the channel side to the dock museum or up and around the old slag bank directly behind the pond
Watch out for the Geese they are mad, one nearly flew in to my wife today
Cache has been muggled old home was being used by furry friends so changed shape and moved slightly good hunting please take a pen to sign

As a boy I used to fish for the small carp that where contained within the pond these being a kind of crucian carp named gilpin carp, there were also some strains of goldfish that were contained in the lake which I was told at the time had been a present from as far eastern customer for the steelworks but I think they had probably come from ex funfair fish that had been discarded by their owners once they grew too big for there bowls!
The lake also used to have wild terrapins which could be seen resting on some of the underwater features within the lake. I do not know if they are still here, but you never know see if you can spot any!
The lake presently contains some carp to around 18 pound as well as shoals of rudd and roach and a few bream that can be seen sometime at the far end of the lake nearest to the Asda outlet.
The fishing was stopped around five years ago due to the abundance of the bird life and in the last few years a Travelodge was built and extended on one of the banks. Dominos pizza outlet is around the corner if your feeling peckish ;-)

There is free parking available at this coordinates N 54 07 359 W 003 14 427 for normal cars, motorcycles, push bikes and other road vehicles under 6 foot, otherwise if you’re in a bus park on the adjacent road ;-)
