Church Micro 1751- Smarden Traditional Cache
DrDnMe: The cache pot has gone missing; we don't have a replacement - and, we might be moving out of the area in the New Year. We think it best to let this one go at this time. Shame.

St Michael the Archangel, Smarden.
The village of Smarden is first known through reference to the rector of the church, Adam de Essex in 1205.
The village was visited by Elizabeth I in 1576 and she was so impressed with what she saw that she ratified the charter previously granted by Edward III. He had allowed them a weekly market and an annual fair. There is a facsimile of Elizabeth’s charter hanging inside the church.
The church is well worth looking inside to see its high scissor beam roof. This has given rise to it being informally named The Barn of Kent! The wooden alms box has been in place here since at least 1533 but much older is the copper plate attached to the lid of the box. This is 13th century and came from France.
The entry point into the churchyard from the main street is well worth experiencing, next to the Art Gallery and underneath an overhanging building – Mind your head!
If any body would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
