Geocache Description:

The Gresswell Possum Superhighway geocache is located within the Gresswell Habitat Link and celebrates biological diversity and having some good old fashioned fun while hunting for a cache!

The Gresswell Possum Superhighway geocache is not for short, inebriated, clumsy, very young or nervous folk! You'll see what I mean when you get there..... It's also probably not a great idea to do this at night! I would also recommend your GPS hang on a lanyard for this one (or perhaps leave it nearby while you do the final few metres) to save you dropping your GPS like I did...when you go for the cache you'll see how easy that might be!

A little bit about this peaceful and interesting area:

This cache is locted in the Gresswell Habitat Link. The Gresswell Habitat Link, along with the Gresswell Forest and Gresswell Hill, makes up an area of regional faunal significance. It is the largest and most significant stand of River Red Gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis on public land in Greater Melbourne and one of the largest and most intact in General Melbourne. The link is separated from the Golf Course and Wattle Ave by a farm fence. It has a formal trail including boardwalks over the marshland near Wattle Ave.

The role of the Gresswell Habitat Link

The ultimate biological value of a fragmented site lays in the strength of its habitat links. The Gresswell Habitat Link will assist and maintain species diversity and genetic flow between the biologically significant Gresswell Forest and La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary. It provides a link for birds to other habitat patches such as Bundoora Park and Simpson Barracks. It is pivotal in the long-term survival of species such as the Sugar Glider 'Petaurus breviceps', which in turn can have a flow on effect of benefiting nocturnal birds of prey such as the Barking Owl 'Ninox connivens'.

There are numerous other geocaches in the area and you can actually walk to all of them from here (but it will be a several kilometre walk, although lovely and highly recommended!). You can park in a number of places, depending upon how far you wish to walk. The nearest parks to this cache are either on Bendoran Cresent or Gresswell Road. If you park on Bendoran Crescent, I recommend you take the SECOND track to the right; it will take you to the GZ over a nice walkway and avoid the muddy ground the first track takes you through! You can also park over on Greenwood drive (there's a carpark, playground, amenities and a short walk to three other caches!) and walk through the Gresswell Forest Wildlife Reserve along the Northern boundary; there are numerous gates in and out of this Reserve.

About the Cache Container

The Cache Container itself is one of those annoying (but oh so useful!) mint tins....I prefer the larger containers myself, but this particular location needed to have something smaller. It only holds a logbook, so bring your own pen. There is a little room for micro coins, but that would be about it.

My GPS easily located this cache, but for some reason my phone wasn't very happy; I suspect it might be in a bit of a marginal area depending upon which carrier you use. It will get you close however no problems and you'll quickly see which way to go (the name of the cache is a clue...).

Be careful retrieving it!

Be mindful of snakes, especially now that we have the warmer weather back upon us!

The First To Find (Congratulations 80degrees!!!!) will achieve a satisfied glow and of course, Glory!
