Geocache Description:

Johnson's Corner On the 13th February Flt. Lt. Johnson and his crew (Lt H Johnson, Lt G Nye, Lt W Francher, Sgt J Higgins, Sgt K zerger, Sgt E Williams, Sgt P Bartkus, Sgt P Hazzard, Sgt P Simpson) took off from Rattlestone in Suffolk in their B.17 Bomber On their return to Great Britain their plane was badly damaged and the crew bailed out over Romney Marsh while Flt Lt W Johnson kept the plane flying; it had crossed the British coastline at Hythe at around 2,000 feet and the last man jumped at 800 feet. The plane then crashed killing Flt Lt W Johnson - he was awarded the D.S.C. posthumously and was also nominated for the Congessional Medal of Honour. Take time to visit the memorial.
