This is one of a series of 10 caches based between Preston and Sutton Poyntz. The total distance is around 2 miles and follows a popular dog walking route. Not suitable for MTBs.
The original parking in the old limestone quarry off Coombe Valley Road is no longer available, so suggest you park on Puddledock Lane at N50 39.016 W002 25.293 and then start the series at Coombe Valley Walks 6. After No 10, then climb up and over the hillfort for No 1, this will avoid any road walking.
From parts of the walk there are great views of Weymouth Bay and Portland and also inland across to The White Horse.
Most of the caches contain numbers which need to be collected and used to find the bonus. Unfortunately due to SSSI restrictions the Bonus is not active, but take a note anyway in case I get a thumbs up from the SSSI authority.
Update: Finally got the thumbs up from the SSSI, but now have to contact the Land Owner and Working Tennant.......
You will need to take a pen or pencil to sign the logs.
The route is generally well drained and dry, but there is one short muddy section. The route is quite hilly and not suitable for wheelchairs.
There may be sheep in the fields so it is advisable to keep dogs on a lead.
Look out for deer, buzzard, and enjoy listening to the skylarks. After the water reservoir, look out for Alpaccas, Rhia, and also our very own pygmy goats, (Marmite and Twiglet)
The route takes you over Chalbury Hill Fort (SSSI) which is a much smaller version of the hill fort at Maiden Castle. It is a roughly triangular little enclosure of about 4 hectares and was once protected by a single ditch and a rampart of limestone slabs, obtained from quarry ditches inside the fort.
Congrats to the local FTF champions TeamKwest and Team Beavo on getting yet another FTF.
