Geocache Description:

This cache is in memory of Jan’s brother’s dog, Mocho. Please DO NOT park on Hwy 173. There is plenty of room to park right by the cache.

Mocho was a great, faithful dog. He lived most of the time in Houston with Jan’s brother, Joe and his family. He would often come over to Kerrville (near Guadalupe Heights) for visits.

Mocho had some great adventures, but his most famous one was his tangle with an alligator in Clear Lake in Horse Pen bayou – it’s how he earned his additional name Macho. Mocho was always adventurous and resourceful, he partially ate then pushed thru a backyard gate. As neighbors with their kids tried to catch him to return him they chased him to Horse Pen Bayou. As they watched, he was grabbed by an alligator and pulled under. He escaped, resurfaced and then was grabbed and taken under a second time. Amazingly he was able to escape again and was able to swim to shore. The 9 foot long alligator came up the shore after him, but he was too fast on land and was able to get away. Being badly mangled and bruised he allowed neighbors who had watched the whole incident to catch him. They then took him to the vet where he received stitches from tooth holes and rips in his skin and antibiotics and he survived. From that time on, he was called Macho Mocho.

Unfortunately, on one of his visits to Kerrville, he made his way out on to Hwy 173 and was not as fortunate this time – as he was hit by a car very near the cache’s location.

We just wanted to honor a really heroic and great dog.
