This is actually a simple multi-cache with the final location of the container a very short distance away. The cache can be found with a GPS device that has Chirp technology or the traditional way by viewing a posted tag at the Memorial indicating the final coordinates.
The coordinates take you to Lincoln-Douglas Square in Alton’s Antique district. This is site number one of the Lincoln & Civil War Legacy Trail. The trail consists of nine site markers placed in Alton at places of historical significance.
The seventh and last debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas in the ongoing U.S. Senatorial campaign was held at this site on October 15, 1858. Approximately 5000 people gathered in front of the old Alton City Hall to hear the two candidates. The debates received national attention, with Lincoln arguing against the extension of slavery into the western territories, and Douglas campaigning for the states rights. The following November Douglas defeated Lincoln for the Senate seat, but two years later, Lincoln defeated Douglas in the race for presidency.
If searching with a compatible GPS stand at the posted coordinates between the Lamp Post and the Park Bench to receive the Chirp. Wait for the signal (usually within 20 seconds) to download to your GPS to tell you where to go to find the final. The chirp coordinates are saved as a special waypoint on your GPS but the message is not preserved so you may want to make notes. The message is the hint.
