If you are coming from the coast and driving eastward you may notice that it gets drier and the vegetation types change to those xeric (likes dry conditions) the further east you go. The pines you see around you are pinyon pines, one of the types which produces pine nuts and an indicator of dry areas. These were a food source for the native Americans. I have always liked to drive Highway 58 when going eastward as it is scenic, peaceful, and with light traffic. Also, I think it is little patroled so I could "open it up."
