Sheriff Ed Beeler and his men rode into the outlaw camp three miles from town at the county bridge. They began shooting without warning. In the shootout more than 50 shots were exchanged. One horse was killed and one member of the Smith gang was wounded. But the outlaws fled the sheriff.
The sheriff realized he had stirred up a hornets nest sent to St. Johns for a posse. Gibbons and seven others rode out to help the sheriff. The sheriff was on the trail of the outlaws. What the posse members didn’t know, was after two hours after the search began the sheriff gave up and returned to St. Johns. Mean while the posse formed two groups.
The younger men Gus Gibbons, Frank Lesueur, Antoinio Arimijo and Frank Ruiz, were to continue tracking the outlaws.
The others Dick Gibbons (uncle to Gus), and three others were to try and get ahead of the outlaws and cut them off. The plan was to meet with the sheriff who was presumed to be in the field.
