. In August of 1901 the Arizona Rangers were being formed. The second week of September 1901 Carlos Tafolla of St. Johns was the 7th man to join the rangers, a total of 14. Their first assignment was to go after the Smith gang.
On October 7, 1901. Ranger Tafolla, Ranger Hamblin and Deputy Bill Maxwell of Apache County Sheriffs office. Tracked the Smith gang along the Black River in the White Mountains. As they approached the gang, one of the gang members asked how they should surrender. As he was approaching them dragging his rifle behind him and brought it up shooting Maxwell in the head killing him instantly. Ranger Tafolla was shot in the torso twice and died that night around midnight. As the Ranger was dying he pulled a silver dollar from his pocket and asked it be given to his wife. It and his unpaid wages would be all she would get. A two year pension was later given her after the story was told.
