ExploreWV GeoChallenge is West Virginia’s official Geocaching enthusiast group brought to you by the WV Department of Education and the Arts, the WV Division of Tourism, and the WV Division of Culture and History. Through ExploreWV, various Geocaching trails and challenges will be organized, providing an excellent and adventurous way to see our beautiful Mountain State.

ExploreWV’s second challenge is the Main Street Challenge, which takes geocachers to all 12 of West Virginia’s registered Main Streets. Geocachers will be able to experience small town charm while traveling the length of the Mountain State. Unlike previous ExploreWV challenges, Main Street WV (MSWV) does not require a Playcard. Instead, there are “Surprise to Find” gifts located in each of the 12 geocaches that contain gift certificates and coupons to local businesses. There will also be plenty of limited-edition Main Street collectables dropped in each cache for unsuspecting geocachers to find. More information on these collectables may be found on our websites which are listed below.

For those of you who seek more than the coveted collectable item and “Surprise to Find” gifts, we have created a Main Street challenge in which you have to find and document code words in all 12 Main Street geocaches using an official Playcard. The first 100 people to correctly complete their Playcard will receive an ExploreWV Geo-Pack containing an ExploreWV clip-on zipper pouch (perfect for geocaching essentials), an ExploreWV keychain pen, and an ExploreWV notebook to keep track of all your geocaching adventures.

To receive all the benefits of geocaching in West Virginia and to register for your official Main Street Playcard, visit us online at GeocacheWV. You may also add us on Facebook.

Please note: If you have previously registered for the WV Geocoin Challenge, you must still register separately for the Main Street challenge and Playcard.

The Capitol City’s East End is home to East End Main Street, the first of twelve registered Main Streets in West Virginia. Founded in 2002, the project is based in historical preservation and over the years, it has developed into an economic powerhouse that supplies a quality of life rivaled by other towns. Charleston’s East End is home to the West Virginia State Capitol, Kanawha Players theatre, numerous unique eateries, and the city’s new baseball stadium, Appalachian Power Park. Annual events in the area include October’s HallowEast, summer’s FestivALL, and East End specialties such as the East End Yard Sale and East End Main Street Garden Showcase. For more information on the Charleston East End and surrounding areas, visit GeocacheWV or East End Mainstreet.

You will be seeking a medium container. Under the lid, there will be a DID YOU KNOW? blurb that includes interesting facts about each Main Street community. If you choose to participate in the Playcard portion of this series, there will be a highlighted word in each blurb that will be used in the Playcard. Please use etiquette and be courteous when Geocaching and place the container exactly where you found it. If there are any problems with the cache including maintenance alerts, please inform ExploreWV as soon as possible.

Special thanks to the Main Street West Virginia organizations as well as the West Virginia Insurance Commission for their assistance in this challenge. We’d also like to give a special thanks to Knight who says Ni for placing and maintaining this geocache.
