We have received several compliments on the family week series and requests for more family friendly caches. So we decided to set out a few caches based on books, movies and TV shows with "Family" in the title or about families. The inaugural cache is based on one of my favorite childhood books.
"Swiss Family Robinson" by Johann David Wyss is the story of a family shipwrecked on an island they name "New Switzerland." Even though there is no phone, no lights, no motorcars, (oops sorry wrong island!), the family through resourcefulness, hard work and devotion to one another not only survive but thrive in their new home.
As a young boy I loved the book for the adventure and exotic locals it described. It was exciting to read of the family's struggle to find food, build a home and defend themselves from wild animals.The Robinson boys have many fine exploits, and several times throughout the book one person risks life and limb to come to the aid of another.
Now though its appeal to me lies mainly with the relationships of the family members who unselfishly care for one another. Many times the author takes pains to illustrate the family’s mutual love and respect.
