Geocache Description:

Drive as far as you can on the old New London Turnpike, then park in the parking lot at the gate where the "driveable" part of the road ends and you must continue on the old road via bike or on foot. (Bring bright orange clothing with you and check signs to see if you need to wear it.)

There is much that is lovely and lost in this area.

Wandered through this pretty, peaceful stretch of road last year. By the side of the road, found one lonely gravestone overlooking a wetland, with the following inscription:

"Alas how ill that bursting storm
The fainting spirit braves
When they, the lovely and the lost,
Are gone to early graves"
(A stanza from an old poem)

The young woman commemorated on the stone has the same last name as the family name in WG028 Historic Cemetery about 2/10th of a mile back along the road. Yet, her gravestone was located quite a distance from the others. Curious.

Last weekend, was biking through Big River. Went to the spot where the gravestone was: it was no longer there!

Took a very close look where the stone used to be. Bending down to examine the spot, all that remained was a deep rectangular indentation where the gravestone and its marble base was. Retraced footsteps to the graveyard and found that the gravestone and its base are now in WG028 (450 lbs. has been moved back to the historical graveyard).

It seems "the lovely and the lost" gravestone is back where it belongs; why it was lost in the lovely spot near the swamp and how it got back into WG028 remains a mystery.
