You are about to arrive at the CITY LIMITS of Tucumcari or you are just leaving the CITY LIMITS. The elevation is 4,085. Tucumcari
was named the Tree City, USA by The Arbor Day Foundation. From here you can see the "Tucumcari Mountain" with the "T" painted on it by the High School Seniors each year.
In 1901, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built a construction camp in the Western portion of Modern Day Quay County. Because of Numerous Gunfights, the camp became known as "Six Shooter Siding" and later renamed Tucumcari. Tucumcari was founded in 1901 and is the County Seat of Quay County.
The Old US Route 66 runs through Tucumcari and has had several names: Gaynell Avenue, Tucumcari Boulevard and Route 66 Boulevard.
The Historic Rock Island/Southern Pacific Train Depot is currently being renovated downtown.
