Geocache Description:

I thought I would share my science geek-ness with you in this geocaching series. I am a Cytogenetic Technologist. Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomes. I diagnose genetic disorders. All 24 caches in this series will be found in a 15ml centrifuge tube. I spin chromosomes in these at work every day!

Humans normally have 46 chromosomes in each cell, divided into 23 pairs. Two copies of chromosome 16, one copy inherited from each parent, form one of the pairs. Chromosome 16 spans about 89 million base pairs and represents almost 3 percent of the total DNA in cells. Chromosome 16 likely contains between 850 and 1,200 genes. Changes in chromosome 16 are associated with several types of cancer, Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, and Trisomy 16. Trisomy 16 is the most common genetic reason for first trimester miscarriages.
