Geocache Description:

I thought I would share my science geek-ness with you in this geocaching series. I am a Cytogenetic Technologist. Cytogenetics is the study of chromosomes. I diagnose genetic disorders. All 24 caches in this series will be found in a 15ml centrifuge tube. I spin chromosomes in these at work every day!

Humans normally have 46 chromosomes in each cell, divided into 23 pairs. Two copies of chromosome 17, one copy inherited from each parent, form one of the pairs. Chromosome 17 spans about 79 million base pairs and represents between 2.5 percent and 3 percent of the total DNA in cells. Chromosome 17 likely contains between 1,200 and 1,500 genes. Changes in chromosome 17 are associated with Miller-Dieker syndrome and Smith-Magenis syndrome.
