This cache celebrates the work of Rene Orchiston whose flax collection was used to cultivate this wonderful flax garden in Kawerau. The pa harakeke (flax plantation) was set up behind Rautahi Marae in 2008 by local Rotary and sponsors to provide a range of different harakeke (phormium tenax) …New Zealand native flax. They have been bred for different features such as colour, leaf length, etc.
Rene, who is pictured with David Bellamy on the explanatory sign at the site, passed away on October 19, 2010 at the age of 91. She is seen here, during the setting up of the gardens, with Kawerau District Council workers Connie and Jackie. Lurking in the background (because he is also a stealthy cache-hunter) is Rotarian John Brierley who has been highly instrumental in many such sites around Kawerau. The cache is a film canister. GPS readings were made difficult by the hill so are accurate to about 8m.
You will need to solve the puzzle to get the co-ordinates for the cache in this area. (When printing the puzzle from notepad of ipad the top row didn't come out right, but it doesn't actually affect the solution though.)
